Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use regular cocoa powder instead of black cocoa powder? Yep! If you don’t have black cocoa powder on hand, you can totally swap in regular cocoa powder. The cookies will be slightly lighter in color, but still super delicious.
Do I need to chill the cookie dough? It’s not required, but chilling the dough for about 30 minutes helps the cookies hold their shape and keeps them from spreading too much in the oven.
What if I can’t find edible eyes? No worries! You can leave them off or get creative with some white chocolate chips or icing to make little ghost faces!
Can I use other types of candy? Absolutely. If you’re feeling adventurous, throw in some Reese’s Pieces, candy corn, or even mini chocolate bars. The Halloween spirit is all about having fun, after all!

How to Store Leftover Cookies
If, and that’s a big IF, you end up with leftovers, just store these cookies in an airtight container at room temperature. They’ll stay fresh for up to 5 days. If you want to make them last even longer, you can freeze the dough balls before baking, or freeze the baked cookies for up to 3 months. Just make sure they’re fully cooled before you toss them in the freezer!
Tips for Making This Recipe with Kids
Making these cookies with kids is a whole vibe. Here are some tips to keep it fun and stress-free:
Let them get messy with the sprinkles – Have the kiddos add the Halloween sprinkles and edible eyes. It’s their time to shine!
Use small scoops of dough – For little hands, give them smaller portions of dough to roll out, so they don’t get overwhelmed.
Turn it into a decorating party – Let the kids add their own personal spooky touches to the cookies before they bake. Give them different candies to play around with.
Get creative with shapes – Use a cookie cutter to make spooky shapes if you want to get extra fancy. The dough is pretty flexible, so you can easily cut it into fun Halloween designs.
I’ll never forget the first time I made these Halloween cookies with my kids. It was one of those Saturday afternoons where we were all cooped up inside, and I needed something to keep everyone entertained that didn’t involve a screen. We decided to throw a little cookie party in the kitchen.
I let my kids take full control of the sprinkles—big mistake! There were sprinkles everywhere. It was like a glitter bomb had gone off, but the joy on their faces was worth every crumb and sprinkle I found for days afterward.
We ended up eating more cookie dough than we baked, but it was one of those “core memory” moments that made the mess completely worth it.
Why This Recipe Works
This cookie recipe is a winner for a few reasons:
The black cocoa powder gives the cookies a deep, rich chocolate flavor while giving them a spooky, dark look that’s perfect for Halloween. It’s like your regular chocolate cookie, but with a mysterious, midnight twist.
The M&Ms and sprinkles make these cookies pop with color and texture, while still being soft and chewy on the inside. Plus, the edible eyes add a cute (but slightly creepy) touch that kids and adults love.
Simple ingredients – This recipe uses pantry staples, so you don’t need to make a special trip to the store unless you’re grabbing the Halloween-themed goodies.
Perfect for sharing – These cookies are great for group settings. Everyone can join in on the fun, and they’re festive enough to wow a crowd, but easy enough for beginners.
Whether you’re serving these at a Halloween bash or just enjoying them at home with a hot cup of cider, these Chocolate M&M Cookies are sure to be the star of the spooky season!
Enjoy!
